Now accepting solicitations for FY 2014, the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Program Grant (JAG), administered by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions.
The Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) was created in 1988 (Federal Public Law 100-690) and was named by Congress as the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant. The JAG Formula Grant Program has six purpose areas:
Law enforcement programs
Prosecution and court programs
Prevention and Education programs
Corrections and community corrections programs
Drug Treatment programs
Planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs
Crime victim and witness programs (not compensation)
What can JAG funds be used for?
Grantees may utilize JAG funds for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, as well as research and evaluation activities that will improve or enhance law enforcement programs related to criminal justice.
In FY 2013, the JAG program awarded $280,000,000 in funding to states and territories in the United States. See attached link for preliminary JAG state allocations of FY 2014 funds. The JAG Advisory Committee determines availability of funding for projects when they receive funds. Federal funding varies each year and the formula is based on reported crime. States and other jurisdictions are eligible to apply for funding if it fits within the scope and policies of the Department of Justice (DOJ).
