Grant FundsThe National Institute of Justice (NIJ.gov) recently announced they are accepting applications for the following funding opportunities related to forensic science and research:

  1. Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Program
  2. Research and Development in Forensic Science for Criminal Justice Purposes

Both opportunities are ideal funding sources for forensic laboratories, particularly those in need of additional analysis equipment such as firearms & tool marks or trace evidence comparison microscopes and ALS imaging tools to screen and document bodily fluids, gunshot residue, and blood spatter on various types of evidence.  Last year, the Coverdell Forensic Science program awarded over $9,500,000 in funds to 70 applicants.  The Research and Development in Forensic Science program awarded over $10,000,000 in funds to 30 applicants.

Leeds’ comparison microscopes (Discovery, LCF3, LCF2, & LCT), multi-wavelength imaging tool (LSV), and near-infrared camera & software kit (N-IRC) are designed to assist forensic laboratories conducting important forensic examinations and research.  Strapped with limited or reduced budgets, programs such as Paul Coverdell and Research and Developement in Forensic Science provide much needed financial assistance to help forensic laboratories fund much needed equipment.  The NIJ requires applicants to register prior to applying for funding programs and to apply early for funding opportunities.  To learn more about Leeds forensic equipment please click on the following links:
