The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) released this week a new solicitation opportunity: Research and Evaluation on Violence Against Women: Teen Dating Violence, Sexual Violence, and Intimate Partner Violence.  One research focus identified in this solicitation is “research that explores the forensic aspects or role of prosecutors in case processing of sexual violence” (page 4).  The Leeds Spectral Vision System (LSV), a multi-wavelength viewing and imaging tool, offers unique capabilities to forensic researchers and scientists providing evidence for prosecutors to use in a court of law.  This innovative system provides strong forensic technology for solid scientific research and examination of bodily fluids, victim bruising, bite marks, trace evidence, accelerants, explosives and gunshot residue.

LSV capabilities include:

  • Rapid screening and image capturing of hidden evidence at different wavelengths from UV to Near-infrared
  • Documentation of sexual assault evidence saved in standard formats of JPEG, TIFF, PNG, BMP for both single and comparison images
  • Large variability of field-of-view, allowing examiner to capture images of large pieces evidence or detailed close inspections; easily and reproducibly
  • Unlimited pre-sets allowing examiner to easily capture images at commonly used settings
  • Documented images, with meta data provide highly compelling image for display in court

Application Deadline and Information:

1)  Applicants must register with Grants.gov prior to submitting an application. (See “How to Apply,” page 22.)
